"But prosecutors said the troopers killed the gulls quickly with blows to the animals' heads." this quote from the "Seagulls" article really kind of hit me.
What goes on in my mind is that it really shouldn't matter how quickly the gulls were killed, they were killed, and that's the point.
It's hard to say if it was done with malicious intent or not, cause the only people who would know would be the police officers, and obviously they won't say so to avoid punishment.
I feel like if it was any other normal citizen, who wasn't a part of law enforcement, things would've turned out very differently.
It's sad to see that the death of the gulls was the first solution to a very minor issue.
I agree. The way the article was written made me think that the officers were just really frustrated with the gulls. I don't think thier reaction was very well planned out.
'State law also allows river otters to be trapped and killed if they get under homes, into fish hatcheries or engage in other activities that destroy property.'
In affirmation of the legality.
' “It can be a tough go,” she added. “But we have to figure out how to live with wildlife.” '
On moral grounds: Why do we have to figure out how to live with destructive wildlife?
In reference to the "Sylvan Beach divided over otter deaths" article, I don't understand why the man went straight to a decision to kill the otters.
It said that his original plan was to capture and relocate them, but then thought it that shooting them would be more "humane." I disagree with his actions completely. Yes, relocating would be difficult, and take some time. But near the end of the article Russel Link says that he has seen wild life successfully relocated. Killing the otters was unnecessary.
I understand that the man who killed the otters was angry over their constant messes made on his boat. But we as humans should sometimes accommodate our living situations and life styles around the environment we keep them in. After all, his boat is invading the otter's home. They were there before he was.
Did anyone else read the comments on the seagull article? Aside from a couple of commenters wondering what's the big to-do over flying beach rats, the thread is this huge outpouring of hatred for the entire Washington police force. People saying they hope the troopers get clubbed to death themselves on duty, things like that.
Found that a bit frightening, myself.
I was on Vashon today, and there was a spray painted sign next to the tattoo place that said
"somebody Otter KILL THE PIG!"
I think that people just don't think logically, these state troopers aren't necessarily bad people.
they probably didn't weigh their options, you know kill these cute little beach birds or call an expert and have them removed and relocated without the whole death thing
they probably didn't grasp the second idea
bad move on their part
I think that the animals have a right to the lands. They were here first and we are slowly running their natural habitat. Of course they're going to start getting in our way, because we set ourselves up to have to in a way "battle" them for our home.
It seems like humans routine is to come in and take over different lands...well thats messed up. We have no right to claim what isn't ours.
On top of that, if there were problems with seagulls you don't have to beat them over the head to get rid of them. And yeah they say its harder to relocate the otters, well tough, its better than shooting them.
We need to start looking at the animal cruelty we are encouraging, or we are going to ruin the whole ecosystem (not like we aren't already). Like it says in The 11th Hour, we are at the top and the most powerful, but yet the most vulnerable. We rely on all the smaller organisms to survive, so we shouldn't be killing them.
